We Are Carly and Ellie, and we grow mushrooms in a 300-year-old barn in Yorkshire. We started Northern Mushroom Club because people deserve better than sad, soggy imported mushrooms.
We pick ours at their best which means you get maximum flavour, with nobody in between. Welcome to the club.
We both came from beer, working at family breweries that grew from a handful of people into names known across the country and beyond. We watched craft beer show people there was more to beer than mass-produced lager.
Mushrooms haven't had that moment yet. We want to be part of it, while staying small enough that we're still the faces behind every box.
Because right now, most mushrooms in the UK are imported. They probably look fine when they leave. By the time they've travelled here they're sad and soggy, and they're the reason so many people think they don't like mushrooms.
So we built our own growing room inside a 300-year-old barn in Yorkshire. It's a room within a room, full of fans, filters and humidifiers, and we built it ourselves. Pythagoras was involved at one point. It didn't help. We call it the Mushroom House.
Being small means we pick at exactly the right moment and can send the same day. No secret recipe and no middleman.
Within our first year our mushrooms were on the menus of some of the best restaurants in the north, Michelin-starred kitchens included, and on our stalls at weekend markets around York and Leeds.
